Olives, olives, olives and more olives, Lourmarin, Southern France
The small ancient village of Lourmarin nestles in the middle of vineyards, olive groves and almond trees. In the village you will notice the typical Mediterranean architecture in its winding narrow streets, lovely old restored houses, and well shaded public squares where you can immerse yourself in the gentile Provencal ambience. Every Friday morning the traditional market opens with stands selling a few dozen varieties of cheeses, rustic bread, dry-cured sausages and ham and of course olives: big, small, green, black, fresh, pickled or in oil ... and most deliciously as tapenade (a mixed blend of olives, garlic, anchovies, capers, thyme, rosemary and lemon juice). We eventually bought a 6lbs. fish and cooked it on a bed of root vegetables.
